Sam Lerma

Hi, I'm Sam Lerma! I'm a data engineer in the Washington DC area who currently works at Google.

I started learning about technology at a deeper level as a kid, when I learned Python and the fundamentals of cybersecurity and basic web dev skills after school. I went on to get undergraduate degrees in chemical engineering and economics at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks where I was lucky enough to participate in concurrent graduate course enrollment focused on topics like rocket propulsion and explosive design.

Since then I've worked at various technology companies across the country. Today I mostly focus on projects built on Google Cloud infrastructure at scale, usually ones with extra challenging elements of data processing/HPC or secure design. If you're interested, read more about me below!

Latest thing(s) I'm proud of:
In June I checked off a major bucket list item and got a paper published! It was quite an exciting first journal as well, JAMIA (Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association), and focuses on work I did as a contractor for the CDC on the COVID-19 response when I worked at Booz Allen. You can check it out here.

Other Things I Do

When I'm not working I enjoy competitive ballroom dance, brazilian jiu-jitsu, mushroom growing/forays, art history, and touring museums around town. I also spend more time than I should admit to on here reading history books and working with friends on predictive models for financial markets.
